Is Reflexology For You?

If your answer is yes: Great! You’ve heard just how wonderful it is. You would love to try it or have it again. You probably already know how relaxed it makes you feel. You may have already experienced the wonderful feeling of bliss that takes hold of your whole body. You’ve laughed at your tummy gurgling during a treatment. You’ll hopefully have felt as though you’re walking on air afterwards.

If your answer is no: please read the rest of this and hopefully I will have changed your mind by the end.

I meet men, women, adults and children for a wide range of reasons. Some come just because they love it and want to keep having it. They feel as though it recharges their inner batteries, improves their wellbeing and releases any stress or tension that may have built up since their last session.

Some come for something specific; stress, migraines, back pain, digestive issues, pregnancy related concerns, fertility etc… Reflexology can be a great healer. By reducing tension, improving sleep, aiding relaxation and improving mood it can help improve wellbeing and our own innate healing abilities.

Reflexology is a wonderfully relaxing, holistic therapy that treats the whole body from top to toe. It’s non-invasive, you keep your clothes on but I will need you to take your socks off! It’s also very old. There is evidence it was being used as far back as 4,000 BC in Egypt, China and India. It’s based on energy channels running along meridian lines through our bodies. These lines end at our feet, our hands, our head and our ears, which is why reflexology can be practised on all these areas. I work on the feet.

Just like a river flowing from mountain to sea, the energy lines flow through our body but sometimes the lines get blocked. If logs, boulders and sediment build up across a river, the water will eventually stop flowing and become stagnant. If our own energy flow develops a blockage from stress, physical ailments or negative emotions our energy will falter and stagnate. We won’t feel right. Reflexologists are able to feel these blockages. Each area of the foot, for example, represents a different part of the body and by feeling these blockages we are able to release them. Using simple massage techniques we are able to balance the body’s energy flows and enable it to heal itself.

Energy blockages are just one aspect of a treatment. Reflexology is great for stimulating certain areas. For example if you’re hoping to go into labour naturally we have a protocol where we can stimulate the pituitary gland, the ‘conductor’ of the hormone system to see if we can help start labour. When couples are trying to conceive we can stimulate the uterus, ovaries and follicles in the lead up to ovulating. If you’re feeling exhausted we can stimulate the solar plexus to help give you an energy boost. Where stress is showing we can also help sedate areas, calm them down, sooth and release the tension.

Reflexology also works on both a physical and emotional level. If you’re physically feeling pain or discomfort a reflexologist should be able to feel where the blockage is showing in your body. It also works on an emotional level, joining with traditional Chinese Medicine that if we feel emotions strongly enough, they too will show in our bodies. For example, grief and sadness show in our lungs, anger in our liver and fear in our kidneys. Our back is the support framework of our body. If we have back pain, sometimes that can be a physical reaction to literally not feeling supported enough in our daily lives.

Eunice Ingham, affectionately known as the mother of Reflexology said: "If you're feeling out of kilter, don't know why or what about, let your feet reveal the answer, find the sore spot, work it out.
