Make a difference to our environment

Now more than ever we are being compelled to consider our collective and personal impact on the environment - the sea and marine life in particular. Plastic is being talked about more than ever, the main issue with it being that it never really goes away and increasing amounts are ending up in our sea. It is estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean by weight than fish. Want to make a difference but unsure how? Start by reducing your usage of single-use plastic with these tips;

  1. Invest in a reusable drinks bottle and fill up before you head out for the day. Look out for bottles made of glass or stainless steel as they can be recycled an infinite number of times.

  2. Drink in. Next time you stop for a coffee, take a break and drink from a mug rather than a paper cup as the majority of them have a plastic lining making them difficult to recycle. If you’re often getting coffee on the go, buy a reusable coffee cup. The Daily Bread in Rusthall sell ones made from bamboo and offer a discount when you use one!

  3. Say ‘no straw, please’ next time you order a cold drink. The UK disposes of 8.5 billion plastic straws every year and due to their size they have minuscule recycling rates. Our eco champions the Daily Bread also use straws that compostable.

  4. Bring your own bag. Despite the 5p bag charge we still used 2.1 billion single-use plastic bags in the UK last year.
